The Puerto Rico Trench is actually ~27,480 ft deep, making it the deepest point in the Atlantic. That checks out. Wild that wreckage could literally be unreachable.

The bit about Proteus and Nereus vanishing checks out. Both disappeared in 1941 carrying bauxite ore on near identical routes. No wreckage ever found. Three ships same class same fate is not coincidence thats a design flaw.

The manganese ore shifting in the hold got me. Dense cargo liquefying under stress on a structurally compromised ship with ONE engine? The odds were stacked against them before they left Barbados.
